Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values (MERV)

Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values (MERV) reports an air filters ability to capture larger particles between 0.3 and 10 microns (µm). This value is helpful in comparing the performance of different filters. The higher the MERV rating the better the filter is at trapping specific types of particles.

Naturally one would think to choose the highest MERV rated filter based on the chart. However, higher MERV rated filters can limit the amount of air flow your system may need. The age of your HVAC unit, size of the filter, type of HVAC blower motor are some factors to consider when choosing the right type of filter for your system.

If your HVAC cannot support a higher rated MERV filter that you desire, J J Heating and Air Conditioning can combine other systems to help purify your air with a lower rated filter, without sacrificing performance. We can also improve your air quality by adding an air scrubber device or an ultraviolet light device and bipolar ionization.
